A good forum manager is PHPBB. I have used it and it works great. You can customize the template or get a pre-made one from anywhere on the internet.

A good CMS is Joomla. I use this the most and you can use the Community Builder extension in order to make it into a forum. You can also use Community Builder by itself but I recommend using Joomla.

All of the things listed above are 100% free and open source. I wouldn’t recommend trying to create a forum from scratch (which was suggested above). Use open source software like the ones I listed or something similar rather then an editing program.

Also, all of three of these programs have extensive knowledge-bases and communities where you can ask questions and troubleshoot. You won’t be left in the dark if you choose one of these.

Greetings, I use a free hosting service for my blog website and it does just fine, I use wordpress on it but I also have another test site that I use Joomla on. Both CMS are great to use and both work excellent on a free hosting service, there are no ads and you can upgrade later to paid hosting.

It’s a great way to get started and I don’t pay anything for them to host my website with no ads, it’s great, you can even create backups of the website in the control panel.

I also use another service with the free hosting that allows me to have a free domain, which is another bonus because the website looks professional now with a whole domain name instead of a subdomain. You can connect the domain name with the free hosting by changing the name servers. Best to get the hosting and free domain service at the same time. Just have two tabs open when you sign up for both and you email tab as well so you can confirm signing up.

I use filezilla to to connect to the server, its another free program.Helps to upload all my files and such to the website.

You can also download the wordpress CMS or Joomla CMS for free, those are also both free programs and then you can upload them to your website. Both CMS have a good user base and nice plugins and extensions.
